Resident Project Representative
A Resident Project Representative (“RPR”) is a person assigned to a project, usually on a full-time basis, to act as the engineer’s eyes and ears on the project. Having an RPR on site full-time or part-time can ensure the quality of work and conformance with the contract requirements.
• A factor to consider is the complexity of the equipment being installed on a project.
Water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants, and pump stations all have complicated systems and equipment, including pumps, valves, motors and chemical feed systems that must be installed with high precision to operate properly.
• Large scale projects also present challenges that may support the use of an RPR.
• A large project may have numerous activities happening simultaneously.
• Larger projects also generate an extensive amount of paperwork (shop drawings, payment applications, job meeting minutes, etc.).
• Having an RPR on-site handling this paperwork on a daily basis may be efficient and practical for project administration.
• It is important to balance the RPR’s time between (1) observation of construction activities and interaction with contractors and (2) managing paperwork and project documentation.
• For these types of projects, it may be appropriate to have an RPR on site to continuously observe and confirm that all of the installation requirements are met.
